Malise Cooper Dick (1935-2007)
High-Resolution Image

This past week we suffered the loss of Malise Dick, our dear friend for many years, and CHEARS' Treasurer. [Photos of Mal are here.] Malise had a massive heart attack Monday evening, June 4, and died at 7 am on June 10. Malise Dick was a wonderful man – economist, loving husband, father, photographer, encourager, special friend and mentor to international students, CHEARS Earth Squad tutor, sailor, art collector, serious teller of jokes, VW camper van owner, lover of giving and enjoying good cheer, supporter of the good, and one of the kindest persons whom we have been privileged to meet. We will miss him very much.

During this past week there was increasing hope that he would pull through, as he seemed to improve each day. Visiting him on Friday, he was so welcoming, cheerful, and as usual an entertaining and insightful conversationalist. We joked about his going sailing next weekend. He gave Bob an article to read in the Economist that he had been reading in the hospital. We took cards that the Earth Squad Tutoring children had made for him to the hospital Wed night and he thanked us warmly. Eugenia said that he valued getting them greatly, especially the one from Kimberly, his tutee, thanking him for tutoring her.

Professionally Malise Dick (72) was an economist (MA from Cambridge in UK and Brown University in USA), continuing to teach and work on capacity building projects in African, Asian, Central and South American countries after retiring from the World Bank (Senior Transport Economist 1972-93). Mal had a broad knowledge of development issues. Born in 1935 in Glasgow, Scotland, Mal served honorably in the UK Royal Air Force, and through broad experience, developed strong pacifist and egalitarian principles. Mal was an avid photographer, and was long active in the International Photographic Society of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank (IPS). He is survived by his wife Eugenia Kalnay of Greenbelt, Maryland (ekalnay@atmos.umd.edu) and son Jorge Rivas of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

A memorial open house/potluck at Eugenia and Mal's home at 56 Lakeside Drive Greenbelt MD 20770 will be held this Friday (6/15/07) from 5 to 9 pm to honor Mal. If you would like to make a donation in his name, Eugenia has asked that it be made to the American Friends Service Committee at the address below, following Malise's pacifist beliefs.
